Day 3 - the ride itself!

Hi all,

Wow! Words truly cannot describe. Kind of like trying to explain to someone who has never ridden a motorcycle why it is that I love to ride! Look at the following pix and you will understand - of course, my biker peeps already understand and a big THANK YOU for encouraging me!

I hope to come back some day and spend a whole week here, Monterey alone is worth the trip but Big Sur -- like WOW!

One thing I have learned - do not leave the camera charger 150 miles away! (:-) Anyway I have lots of great pix!

Tomorrow -- back to SF and to the PCA/ACA Conference - where I am presenting on Web 2.o and Motorcycle culture. This ride is actually part of my research for the conference! (yep, really!, uh huh!......)

More from SF.

March 17 - St Patty's Day!

Hi all,

I am now in Monterey. Got the Harley this morning and rode about 140 miles out through Golden Gate Park, up to Sutro Heights and Lands End - then down rt 35 and rt 1 to Monterey. The ride was fantastic! Just a tiny taste of what I will see tomorrow. Then I explored Monterey and Carmel for a few hours. The pix are at:

Take care - tomorrow I ride Big Sur and will post more pix tomorrow night.

Thursday-13-March-2008

Welcome to my Big Sur motorcycle adventure!

I am giving a paper and demo of "Web 2.0 Meets Motorcycle Culture" -- or "The Digital Biker" at the 2008 annual Popular Culture Assoc./American Culture Association conference in San Francisco on March 20. I am also aware, as anyone who seriously enjoys the sport of motorcycling, that the 90 miles of Pacific coast between Monterey and San Simeon are one of the greatest rides on Earth.

Do the math!

So, I am leaving Happy Valley (State College, PA) this Sunday, renting a Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic (same as I have at home), and riding along the coast for 3 days. Two of those days will be between San Francisco and Monterey/Carmel -- which vary from prolific to surreal. The middle day will be along US 1 from Monterey to San Simeon (where the Hearst Castle is located). The pictures I have seen suggest this is the part I will never forget as long as I live! (:-) I figure I can cruise at 40 mph and still stop lots of places for pictures (it's only 90 miles, typical pre-breakfast ride in the mountains of central Pennsylvania).

Having become somewhat aware of Web 2.0 applications and their effect on motorcyclists and motorcycle culture, I decided to make a blog of my Big Sur ride. I will be taking digital video the whole time and will have finished movies ready for viewing soon after returning home. I have also made extensive use of the Web and other Internet resources to plan every aspect of my ride for safety. I will be wearing a helmet (my choice). I hope to have Internet every evening so watch here for daily posts of the adventure.

Here is a video overview of my planned route, made with Google Earth:

Some resources I am using:

Plus the usual assortment of maps, area guides, etc.
